Essentialy a deep tissue massage this therapy is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity, such as athletes, and patients who have sustained physical injury. It is also not uncommon for receivers of Deep Tissue Massage to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two. Deep tissue work varies greatly. What one calls deep tissue another will call light. When receiving deep tissue work it is important to communicate what you are feeling.

Massage should NOT hurt. However, it is likely to be a bit more intense than a classic Swedish massage. I am sensitive to the reactioins of my clients bodies. I often know if the pressure is reaching a threshold simply by touch. You should always feel free to speak up if the pressure is not just right for you.
I think that it is also fair to note that the pressure issue can work in an opposite manner as well. I have crossed paths with people that request that I "hurt them" by applying more excessive pressure. " I want it to really hurt!", they say. It's important to be realistic about what one deep tissue massage can achieve. Many people ask for more pressure, thinking that if the therapist just pushes hard enough, they can get rid of all their knots in an hour. This just won't happen. In fact, undoing chronic knots and tension built up over a lifetime is best achieved with an integrated program that includes exercise, work on your posture and ways of moving, relaxation techniques and a regular program of massage.
I work within a range of pressure that is mutualy comfortable. I have performed deep tissue massages on people of every age and size. The dissatisfied deep tissue client is a rare exception.
